Its all about the lecturer..

This would be the last topic we would cover for now. Don't be sad, we will post some more in the future, it's not that the blog going to end. What I mean is that this is the last topic our guest writers would cover, and might I say it has been enjoyable to read their thoughts on each topics. So without further ado, this time our topic would be the lecturer.

Lecturer becoming one of the factor in bringing the best out of students. Some students likes the lecturer to be strict, some likes them more like friends and some even doesn't have preference lecturer.

Not much I can say as too many good lecturer teaching in Uniten. There are so many lecturer to choose from, with so many different style of teaching. Here I would like to ask our guest writer to talk bout some of the lecturer that they encounter in Uniten.

Well everybody talks about experience lecturers, so I'm going to take this opportunity to talk about new lecturers. They don't really have achievements, nor experience but they do have different style of teaching.

I would like to first talk about a lecturer I encounter during my diploma in another university. This newly graduated lecturer is not really open minded and very strict. Being strict is a good thing, but being too strict is a burden to the student. Plus by being unsocial will not help the student either, the lecturer wants a perfect answer without giving guild line to the student.

Here in Uniten, newly graduated lecturer are a bit different. I'm going to talk about Miss Shakirah, the lecturer currently teaching me System Administration.

She is a newly graduated from Uniten itself, having completed Master in Computer Science ( Systems & Networking ) and Degree in Computer Science ( Software Engineering ). Apart from that she also join Student Mobility Programme and have been attached to Institut de Recherche en Communications et Cyberntique de Nantes ( IRCCyN ), France from 1 Nov 2010 to 31 Dec 2010.

It is quite fun studying under her, as jokes are allowed in the class. Some say it is not wise to have jokes in class, but from my opinion, students' pays more attention when subjects that hard to understand been taught in less stress environment. Jokes aside, she is also quite strict but can be negotiable. For example, things like assignments deadline and exams are being negotiate, and after agreement, if the student didn't finish or attend it, marks would not be given. More important is how she care that the student really understand what she's teaching, she would give exercise and walk around to check it, and if the student doesn't understand, she will give one on one teaching session.

In my point of view, rating a good lecturer doesn't come with a lot of achievements or paper they produce. Heck, if that is, better change job perspective from a lecturer to a researcher. What really matters is how they interact and how they deliver their teachings to the students.

I've had my fair share of plenty of teachers and lecturers. Although when I went to UNITEN I didn't expect the kinds of lecturers that I would meet. Probably the most shocking encounter I would say, when I had my first class with Mr. Alan Cheah Kah Hoe.

Grabbed from hudarling.blogspot.com
He said that we can't trust our friends and he was the only one trustworthy enough in our university life, I thought to myself what's the problem with this guy, am I going to enjoy his class? and to add to that he has a do or die marking style where you would normally get one to five marks in quizzes he would make it six marks if you're right or negative one if you're wrong.

After he shocked us with his statement that our own friends are untrustworthy, me and my classmates aim to prove him wrong throughout the whole semester. It was only after we finished his class that we realize that he's actually using reverse psychology, whether he admits it or not, to make us forge our friendship and trust so that it grows stronger.

As strange as his methods of his teachings, he's actually a nice guy to have as your lecturer as from what I see as a student he strives to make sure his students survive university life and the harsher working world. He is truly one shining gem amongst the lecturers in UNITEN and you can really see his sincerity of teaching us kids fresh out of school.

Having said all that I said, I do hope if he reads this post I want him to know students of his class appreciates everything that he has done for the betterment of our knowledge and soft skills and he would be remembered until our days of old.

I'm gonna talk about a lecturer whom have taught me last semester here in UNITEN. He is none other than Mr. Azlan Yusof, a dedicated hardworking man with a great personality.

He works under the Software Engineering department of COIT, had taught me C Programming language. His teaching skills are unorthodox but the method works for us. As a student myself, I wouldn't want a lecturer who would just read out from the slide and expects us to understand everything right on the spot. Especially on a programming subject.

He completed his degree in Computer Science in UTM, in 2000 and continued his masters on the same course the following year and completed it in a year. Right after completing his masters, he immediately went into teaching at the Binary College in 2002 for a year, and then entered UNITEN in 2003 until now.

In the years of teaching here, he has completed a research on an E-learning application in 2005 and is currently researching on a Malay Grammar Checker. Pretty useful considering there aren't any right now in this country yet.

In those months of teaching us, he has been very helpful towards us with our learning. When we wouldn't understand something or a line of programming that we could not interpret, he would explain it to us in a way that would make us laugh because it was logical. A witty man indeed. How he educates us still amazes me till today.
